Charting a New Path; Seizing the Moment

“What’s next after high school?” It’s a question that looms large for seniors, yet a 2022 YouScience survey revealed only 25% of them feel prepared to answer it.

For fourteen ambitious Tulsa Tech students, the answer came earlier—and clearer—than most. During their junior year, they applied for Tulsa Tech’s Nursing Transitions program. This revamped program now provides an opportunity to set students up on a fast track to becoming Practical Nurses. Just six months after high school graduation, this first Nursing Transition class reached a major milestone at their pinning ceremony.

“It’s always exciting to be the first to do anything,” Adrianna Diaz, a graduate of the Practical Nursing Bridge program said. “To have this all done before my friends complete a year of college is an incredible opportunity.”

Her classmate Michelle Juandiego echoed that sentiment: “This program gave me a clear path. Thanks to Tulsa Tech, I can really see my future.”

The journey wasn’t easy. These students balanced rigorous nursing coursework alongside high school commitments—tests, classes, and all the moments that define senior year.

“It takes grit and perseverance to get through it,” Diaz admitted. “But just because you’re working hard doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your senior year.”

Both students credit their success to their instructors, who struck the perfect balance. “They treated us as adults and high schoolers at the same time,” Diaz said with a smile. “They let us grow, but they also understood how young we are.”

For driven high school seniors with a passion for nursing, this program presents a rare opportunity.

“It’s challenging,” Juandiego shared. “Cramming for multiple tests isn’t fun, but if you find balance, it works.”

“If nursing is what you want, dive in,” Diaz added. “This is an amazing option.”

While the Nursing Transitions program doesn’t guarantee entry into the Practical Nursing Bridge class, students can also apply for other Practical Nursing programs starting throughout the year.
